Chapter 1

Unlocking Essential Training

Will, EnableUs Community

Hey everyone, welcome back to Upskilling! I’m Will, and I’m here with Winter. Today we’re diving into something that’s honestly changed the way I work in the NDIS space—free training. And, I mean, not just any training, but the kind that actually makes a difference for providers and support staff.

Winter, EnableUs Community

Absolutely, Will. I think a lot of people hear “free course” and just assume it’s gonna be, you know, a bit basic or not really worth their time. But in the NDIS sector, some of the best training is actually free—and it’s coming straight from the NDIS Commission, universities, or sector experts. It’s not just about ticking a box, it’s about building real skills that help you support participants better.

Will, EnableUs Community

Yeah, and I remember my first time doing the NDIS Worker Orientation Module. I was honestly a bit nervous—like, I thought it’d be all legal jargon and compliance stuff. But it actually broke down participant rights in a way that just clicked for me. I realised, oh, this is about people, not just paperwork. It set the tone for how I approach my work, you know?

Winter, EnableUs Community

That’s such a good point. And the fact that these courses are developed by trusted organisations means you’re not just getting random advice off the internet. You’re learning what’s actually expected in the sector, and it’s all up to date with current standards. Plus, it’s accessible—no matter your budget, you can get started.

Will, EnableUs Community

Exactly. And, like, if you’re new to the NDIS or even if you’ve been around for a while, ongoing training is just... it’s crucial. Things change, standards evolve, and you wanna be ready for audits or just to give the best support you can. Free doesn’t mean low quality here—it’s actually the opposite.

Chapter 2

Spotlight on Must-Do Free Courses

Winter, EnableUs Community

So let’s get into the actual courses. There’s a bunch that we think are absolute must-dos. First up, the Worker Orientation Module from the NDIS Commission. It covers the Code of Conduct, participant rights, and all those ethical responsibilities. It’s mandatory for staff in risk-assessed roles, but honestly, I think everyone should do it.

Will, EnableUs Community

Yeah, and then there’s the infection control training—Supporting People to Stay Infection Free. That one became super relevant during COVID, but it’s still just as important now. It covers PPE, hygiene, all the stuff you need to keep participants safe day-to-day.

Winter, EnableUs Community

And don’t forget the Disability Awareness Course from the University of Tasmania. That’s a great one for induction, especially if you’re bringing new people onto your team. It goes deep into understanding disability, breaking down barriers, and just improving how you communicate with participants.

Will, EnableUs Community

Mental health is another big one. There are free courses from MindSpot, Black Dog Institute, and Beyond Blue. They’re all about recognising mental health challenges, building resilience, and supporting wellbeing—not just for participants, but for your team too. I mean, it’s a win-win.

Winter, EnableUs Community

Yeah, and cultural competency is huge. The SBS Inclusion Program has a free tier that helps you communicate better with people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. I actually worked with a provider who used the SBS modules for their whole team, and it completely changed the way they approached service delivery. Staff felt more confident, and participants from CALD backgrounds said they felt more respected and understood. It was honestly a game changer for them.

Will, EnableUs Community

That’s awesome. And there’s also First Nations cultural awareness modules from Reconciliation Australia and AIATSIS. If you’re working with Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander participants, these are just... I mean, they’re essential. You learn about cultural protocols, respectful engagement, and just how to do things the right way.

Winter, EnableUs Community

And last but not least, cyber security. The Australian Cyber Security Centre has a course for small businesses that covers protecting participant records, securing passwords, and meeting data privacy laws. It’s not the most exciting topic, but it’s so important. With all the sensitive info we handle, you really can’t afford to skip this one.

Will, EnableUs Community

Yeah, I always say, you don’t wanna learn about cyber security the hard way. So, all these courses—they’re practical, they’re free, and they actually address real-world needs. It’s not just theory, it’s stuff you’ll use every day.

Chapter 3

Maximising Training Impact

Winter, EnableUs Community

Alright, so you’ve done the courses—now what? I think the real impact comes from how you use that training in your organisation. Like, tracking completions is a big one. Set up a training register, log who’s done what. It makes audits way less stressful, and you can see where the gaps are.

Will, EnableUs Community

Yeah, and don’t just do it once and forget about it. Use these courses as part of your onboarding for new staff, and then review them every year. Things change, and you wanna make sure everyone’s up to date. Plus, it helps build a culture of learning—people see that you care about their development.

Winter, EnableUs Community

And honestly, print out those certificates! Or, you know, store them digitally if you’re more techy. But displaying them shows participants and families that you’re serious about quality and compliance. It builds trust, and it gives your team a bit of pride too.

Will, EnableUs Community

I heard about a small provider who started using MindSpot’s mental health modules for their whole team. They tracked completions, talked about what they learned in team meetings, and even made it part of their annual review. The result? Participants were happier, staff morale went up, and everyone just felt more confident. It’s not magic, it’s just making the most of what’s out there.

Winter, EnableUs Community

Yeah, and the best part is, you don’t have to spend a cent. It’s all about investing your time and making it part of your everyday practice. That’s how you build a team that’s ready for anything—and participants really notice the difference.

Will, EnableUs Community

Couldn’t agree more. So, if you’re listening and you haven’t checked out these free courses yet, now’s the time. They’re practical, they’re legit, and they’ll help you deliver better outcomes for the people you support.
