Chapter 1

Choosing the Right NDIS Training

Will, EnableUs Community

Hey everyone, welcome back to Upskilling. I’m Will, and I’m here with Winter. Today we’re diving into something that, honestly, tripped me up when I first started in disability services—finding the right NDIS training. There’s just so much out there, it’s kinda overwhelming, right?

Winter, EnableUs Community

Absolutely, Will. I remember when I started, I thought, “Oh, I’ll just Google a course and sign up.” But then you realise, not all training is created equal. Some of it’s super generic, and some just doesn’t line up with what the NDIS actually expects from providers.

Will, EnableUs Community

Yeah, and if you pick the wrong one, it’s not just a waste of time or money. Like, you can actually run into audit issues, or end up with staff who aren’t really prepared for the job. I had that moment of panic—like, am I even doing this right? But then I found a provider that really got the NDIS stuff, and it made all the difference. Suddenly, things clicked, and I felt way more confident.

Winter, EnableUs Community

That’s such a good point. I think a lot of people underestimate how much poor-quality training can set you back. It’s not just about ticking a box for compliance—it’s about making sure your team actually knows what they’re doing, and that participants get the best support possible.

Will, EnableUs Community

Exactly. And, I mean, if you’re not careful, you can end up with training that’s out of date, or doesn’t even mention the NDIS Practice Standards. So, it’s worth taking the time to check if the provider’s got NDIS-specific content, recognised certification, and, you know, good reviews from other providers. That’s kinda my checklist now.

Winter, EnableUs Community

Yeah, and I’d add—look for clear learning outcomes and practical stuff you can actually use on the job. If it’s all theory and no real-world examples, that’s a red flag for me.

Chapter 2

Essential Training Pathways and Providers

Will, EnableUs Community

So, let’s talk about where to actually find the good stuff. The NDIS Commission is the obvious starting point, right? Their Worker Orientation Module and Infection Control training are free, official, and totally aligned with compliance. If you haven’t done those, you’re missing the basics.

Winter, EnableUs Community

Yeah, and then you’ve got sector leaders like DSC—Disability Services Consulting. Their workshops are really practical, and they get into the nitty-gritty of things like support coordination and governance. I’ve heard a lot of providers say DSC’s courses actually help them pass audits, which is huge.

Will, EnableUs Community

And for formal qualifications, Open Colleges and TAFE are the big names. I always get them mixed up, but both offer Certificate III in Individual Support, which is, like, the gold standard if you want to build a career in disability or healthcare. Plus, sometimes you can get subsidies, which is a bonus.

Winter, EnableUs Community

Totally. I did my Cert III at TAFE, and honestly, it opened up so many new roles for me. Before that, I was kind of stuck in entry-level stuff, but after finishing, I could move into more specialised positions. It’s not just about the piece of paper—it’s the confidence and skills you get from proper training.

Will, EnableUs Community

And don’t forget the hands-on stuff. The Australian Healthcare Academy is great for things like first aid, manual handling, and medication assistance. Those are the things you need to actually do the job safely, not just talk about it.

Winter, EnableUs Community

Yeah, and EnableUs—shameless plug, I know—but we focus on compliance, audit prep, and business training for NDIS providers. It’s all about making sure you’re not just compliant, but actually growing and sustainable as a business.

Chapter 3

Cultural Competence and Building a Future-Ready Workforce

Will, EnableUs Community

Alright, so let’s talk about something that’s getting more attention lately—cultural competence. It’s not just a buzzword. Providers like the Centre for Cultural Competence Australia, or CCCA, offer self-paced online courses that are really respected across the sector. They help you understand Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, which is so important for inclusive practice.

Winter, EnableUs Community

Yeah, and Mirri Mirri and SNAICC are both Aboriginal-led, so you’re learning directly from people with lived experience. I’ve seen teams completely transform after doing their training—like, the whole culture shifts, and people start thinking differently about how they support participants from diverse backgrounds.

Will, EnableUs Community

And then there’s the Human Services Skills Organisation, or HSSO. They’re government-backed and focus on workforce development and career pathways. It’s not just about filling skill gaps, but actually building a future-ready workforce for the disability sector.

Winter, EnableUs Community

I love that. I mean, I’ve seen a provider go from just ticking boxes to actually leading the way in cultural safety, all because they invested in Aboriginal-led training. It’s not always easy, but it pays off in team loyalty and better outcomes for participants.

Will, EnableUs Community

Yeah, and I guess the takeaway is—don’t just settle for the first training you find. Look for providers who get the NDIS, who offer practical, up-to-date courses, and who value cultural competence. It’s about building a team that’s not just compliant, but confident and ready for whatever comes next.

Winter, EnableUs Community

Couldn’t have said it better. And remember, keep checking your training sources—NDIS standards change, and you want to stay ahead. That’s it for today’s episode. Thanks for joining us, Will!

Will, EnableUs Community

Thanks, Winter. And thanks to everyone listening. We’ll be back soon with more ways to upskill and grow your team. Catch you next time!

Winter, EnableUs Community

See you next time, everyone. Bye!
