Chapter 1
Why Paid Training Makes a Difference
Will, EnableUs Community
Alright, welcome back to Upskilling, everyone! Will here, and as always, I’m joined by Winter. Today we’re diving into a big one—paid courses. Are they actually worth it, or is free training enough?
Winter, EnableUs Community
Hey Will, hey everyone! Yeah, this is a question we get all the time. I mean, there’s so much free stuff out there, but paid courses—well, they do bring something extra to the table, don’t they?
Will, EnableUs Community
Absolutely. I reckon the biggest difference is structure. Like, with paid courses, you get a clear pathway, proper learning outcomes, and—this is a big one—certification. That’s what auditors and clients actually look for. I remember my first paid course, Certificate III in Individual Support. It wasn’t cheap, but honestly, it gave me so much confidence. And, uh, it actually helped us pass our first audit at EnableUs Community. I was sweating bullets, but that certificate made all the difference.
Winter, EnableUs Community
That’s such a good point. And it’s not just about ticking a box, right? Paid courses like NDIS Support Coordination Training or even Positive Behaviour Support—they go way deeper than the free webinars you find online. You get real, industry-recognised skills. Plus, some of these are tax-deductible and count towards your CPD hours, which is a nice bonus.
Will, EnableUs Community
Yeah, and I mean, free training’s a great starting point, but if you want to stand out, or just make sure you’re not missing anything for compliance, paid courses are the way to go. Like, the Certificate III isn’t even mandatory for everyone, but auditors love seeing it. It just shows you’re serious about quality.
Winter, EnableUs Community
And it’s not just about compliance, either. It’s about upskilling your team so they can actually deliver better support. That’s what it’s all about at the end of the day.
Chapter 2
Choosing the Right Courses for Your Team
Winter, EnableUs Community
So, let’s talk about picking the right courses, because not all paid training is created equal. What do you look for, Will?
Will, EnableUs Community
Yeah, good question. For me, it’s gotta be relevant to what you actually do. Like, if you’re working with behaviour support, then Positive Behaviour Support training is a no-brainer. But if you’re more on the management side, maybe Leadership and Team Management is a better fit. And, uh, always check if the provider’s credible. There’s a lot of noise out there.
Winter, EnableUs Community
Totally. And don’t forget about certification. If it doesn’t give you something you can show an auditor or use for CPD, it’s probably not worth the money. I always ask, “Will this help us avoid audit headaches?”
Will, EnableUs Community
Yeah, and practical benefit too. Like, is it actually going to help your team do their jobs better? I’ve seen providers spend heaps on courses that sound fancy but don’t really move the needle.
Winter, EnableUs Community
That’s so true. I actually know a provider who was struggling with audits—like, failing them, basically. They invested in targeted Positive Behaviour Support training, and it turned things around. Their next audit? No issues. It was a game changer for them.
Will, EnableUs Community
That’s awesome. And there’s other courses too, like Compliance training, or First Nations Cultural Competency. That last one’s huge for building trust with participants. But, I mean, you can’t do everything at once, right?
Winter, EnableUs Community
Exactly. It’s about balancing cost with impact. Sometimes the most expensive course isn’t the best fit. You’ve gotta weigh up what’s actually going to make a difference for your team and your participants.
Chapter 3
Making Training a Strategic Investment
Will, EnableUs Community
Alright, so let’s get practical. How do you actually budget for all this? Training can get pricey, especially if you’ve got a big team.
Winter, EnableUs Community
Yeah, it can. I always say, plan for it. Put training in your annual business plan—like, make it a line item, not just an afterthought. And look for subscription models. Some providers offer memberships where you get access to heaps of courses for one fee. That can save you a lot in the long run.
Will, EnableUs Community
And don’t forget to track your return on investment. Like, are your audit results improving? Are staff sticking around longer? Are participants happier? That’s how you know if your training dollars are actually working for you.
Winter, EnableUs Community
Yeah, I heard about an NDIS provider who really focused on team management and ongoing CPD courses. Their participant satisfaction scores went up, and staff turnover dropped. It wasn’t overnight, but it paid off big time.
Will, EnableUs Community
That’s the dream, right? And I think embedding training into everyday practice is key. Like, don’t just do a course and forget about it. Bring what you learn into team meetings, supervision, all that stuff. It’s gotta be part of your culture.
Winter, EnableUs Community
Exactly. Upskilling isn’t a one-off thing—it’s ongoing. And if you make it strategic, it’s not just about compliance, it’s about building a better service for everyone.
Will, EnableUs Community
Alright, I think that’s a good place to wrap up. If you’re thinking about paid courses, just remember—pick what’s relevant, check the provider, and make it part of your bigger plan. We’ll be back next time with more ways to help you and your team grow.
Winter, EnableUs Community
